THE DRAWBRIDGE KEEPER

I have been reminded again; and I am delighted for the reminder.  This story I heard from my co-worker Nadine and read in the One Month to Live book.  Please allow me to share the reminder with you today.

There was once a bridge that spanned a large river.  During most of the day, the bridge sat with its length running up and down the river paralleled with the banks, allowing ships to pass through freely on both sides of the bridge.  But at certain times each day, a train would come along and the bridge would be turned sideways across the river, allowing the train to cross it.

A switchman sat in a shack on one side of the river where he operated the controls to turn the bridge and lock into place as the train crossed.

One evening as the switchman was waiting for the last train of the day to come, he looked off into the distance through the dimming twilight and cause sight of the train lights.  He stepped onto the control and waited until the train was within a prescribed distance.  Then he was to turn the bridge.  He turned the bridge into position, but, to his horror, he found the locking control did not work.  If the bridge was not securely in position, it would cause the train to jump the track and go crashing into the river.  This would be a passenger train with many people aboard.

He left the bridge turned across the river and hurried across the bridge to the other side of the river, where there was a lever switch he could hold to operate the lock manually.

He would have to hold the lever back firmly as the train crossed.  He could hear the rumble of the train now, and he took hold of the lever and leaned backwards to apply his weight to it, locking the bridge.  He kept applying the pressure to keep the mechanism locked.  Many lives depended on this man's strength.

Then, coming across the bridge from the direction of his control shack, he heard a sound that made his blood run cold.

"Daddy, where are you?"  His four-year-old son was crossing the bridge to look for him.  His first impulse was to cry out to the child, "Run!  Run!"  But the train was too close; the tiny legs would never make it across the bridge in time.

The man almost left his lever to snatch up his son and carry him to safety.  But he realized that he could not get back to the lever in time if he saved his son.

Either many people on the train or his own son -- must die.

He took but a moment to make his decision.  The train sped safely and swiftly on its way; and no one aboard was even aware of the tiny broken body thrown mercilessly into the river by the on rushing train.  Nor were they aware of the pitiful figure of the sobbing man, still clinging to the locking lever long after the train had passed.  They did not see him walking home more slowly that he had ever walked; to tell his wife how their son had brutally died.

Now, if you comprehend the emotions that wen through this man's heart, you can begin to understand the feelings of Our Father in Heaven when He sacrificed His Son to bridge the gap between us and eternal life.

Can there be any wonder that He caused the earth to tremble and the skies to darken when His Son died?  How does He feel when we speed along through life without giving a thought to what was done for us through Jesus Christ?

Thank you, God, for letting me cross the bridge safely.  Forgive my ignorance of the big sacrifice You've done for me.  Sorry for taking You for granted.  Far from being perfect, I ask humbly that You will be patient with me as I'm trying to figure out Your way.  Thank you, Father.  Amen.

The story has also been adapted to a movie and touched many lives.

May this be a blessing!

OUR DEEPEST FEAR

Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God

Your playing small
Does not serve the world
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine
As children do
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us

It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone

And as we let our own light shine
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same
As we're liberated from our own fear
Our presence automatically liberates others

May this be a blessing!

WISE BABY ELIANNE

Marcel forwarded me an email conversation between Elianne and him.  Little did he know that he would get a quick marriage counseling from Prof. Elianne.  :-)

Translation:

Yes, Uncle Marcel.  What is Cici Yanny doing?  Baby is sending an email to Cici Yanny and Uncle Marcel.  Have a good time!  Don't argue ok; you're husband and wife!
Love,
Elianne

JESUS IS THE LIGHTHOUSE

I heard this on the radio the other day.  I thought I would share the blessing with you too:

Jesus is the Lighthouse

There's a Lighthouse on the hill side
That over looks life's sea
When I'm tossed, it sends out a light
That I might see
And the light that shines in darkness
Now will safely lead me over
If it wasn't for the Lighthouse
My ship would sail no more

Everybody that lives around us
Says tear that Lighthouse down
The big ships they don't sail this way anymore
There's no use of it standing round
But then my mind goes back to that
Stormy nite when just in time I saw the light
Oh the light from that old Lighthouse
That stands up there on the hill

And I thank God for the Lighthouse
I owe my life to Him
For Jesus is the Lighthouse
And from the wrath of sin
He has shown the light around me
That I could clearly see
And if it wasn't for the Lighthouse
Where would this ship be?
And if it wasn't for the Lighthouse
Where would this ship be?

WHAT CAN MY $18 DO FOR THE YOUNG MAN?

I had unexpected guests knocking at my door last night.  Two teenage boys asking people to subscribe to Mercury News.  The reason why they were unexpected is because my apartment doesn't allow soliciting.  But let me tell you what's happening next.

The one who approached me at the door was a Hispanic young man.  He said that he's in this scholarship program sponsored by the Mercury News.  However, to continue his scholarship, he needs to get certain number of people to subscribe with the newspaper.  The fee is only $20.  But it will grant the young man another semester in college.  He mentioned that he had come twice in a day already; however, no one was home.  So his hope was high up when he saw my apartment's light was finally on.  Apparently, he's been around my apartment complex for the whole day with the list of apartment numbers who are not yet in Mercury News' subscriptions.  And if you watch the news lately or live in the Bay Area, you should know that we've been having rainstorm these past few days.  Especially yesterday with the wind hitting hard and adding the chill to the day.  So I wonder what the young man had gone through.

On the other hand, I already have a newspaper subscription.  So I don't need another one.  I was just ready to tell him, "I'm sorry I can't help here."  All of the sudden, words just came out of my mouth, "Hey, I don't think I will subscribe to another newspaper today.  But, can I give you few dollars in return?"  He said that it won't do him any good for the scholarship because it won't be recorded in the system.  But I went in still and found the remaining $18.00 I have in my wallet.  I gave all of them to the young man, "Sorry.  You said that the fee is $20.  But this is all the cash I have today.  I wish you all the best."  Off they were to another rainy and windy trip in the neighborhood.

I shared this story with my coworker this morning.  She said, "So how does that money do him any good?  You're wasting your money, girl.  He won't get the scholarship with your extra $18."

As I pondered on her words, I asked God if what I did was actually helpful.  Though I didn't get a chance to say this to the young man directly, I pray that, "My money can get you an umbrella to stay dry under.  Or, get yourself couple cups of hot cocoa to keep you warm.  Or, some food for your family at home.  Or, buy some warm patches to keep your palms and feet warm.  Or, get someone subscribed with the newspaper for a lesser amount to get it recorded in the system.  Stay in school.  Stay out of crime and drugs.  Use my money wisely; even though it's only $18.  God bless you!"

I know what I did was probably not the best solution.  At the same time, I know that God cares for that young man; and that He will do His part to bless the young man.

May this be a blessing.

ONE LESS THING

Marcel and I have different habits in placing our toothbrushes on their stand (charger).  I like to wipe mine clean and dry before placing it whereas Marcel would place his back half wet.  Over the new few days, I would notice the white deposit built up at the stand's surface.  I would then being me .. being pouty as I clean the stand.  Unconsciously, I had blamed Marcel for letting the excess water to drop and build up the deposit.

Well, last night I found the white deposit on the stand!  I was like, "What??  Still?  How come?  But, there's only me using it these days.  Why?"  I rushed to take my camera and took a photo of it as a reminder.  God taught me to see "behind the scene."  Even though I've dried out mine well, with things being used every day, it is just natural for them to get dirty.  Don't be pouty.  Don't be blaming your spouse for it.  Just clean it.  It's no big deal.  And it's not worth of pouty-ing your spouse over it.

My own contribution to the white deposit.
I had the biggest guilty smile last night after God rebuked me.  I sent the photo to Marcel with my story and asked him to forgive this pouty-over-toothbrush-stand wife.  The forgiving hubby that he is he said this to make me feel better.
Two things he looks forward to seeing.  Oh that reminds me not to clean it yet for him to see.

Well, I learn something new each day.  I praise God for the one less thing to be irritated by.  :-)

May this be a blessing!

ELIANNE THE HA HA BABY

Marcel often says that my "medicine" is children.  HAHA.  It's so true though.  If I'm tired, sleepy, hungry, annoyed by Marcel (LOL) or simply being cranky, he would bring up stuff about kids to cheer me up.  For example he would play Maxie's videos, talk in Me-ik's accent, throw out Jasmine's funny phrases, or do their gestures (like Maxie's Pa Pa Paaaaaa, Ci Luk Baaaaaaaaa, Enyaaaaaaakkkkk; or Elianne's Mamihhhhhhh, Baby bilang, Bili Bula Bili Bula Bali Bulu, Good Night You My Little Gentleman .... to name a few).

Another thing that Marcel would do is to pull Elianne's emails.  Every time I receive an email from Elianne, I always feel sooooooo happy.  She is such a bubbly person.  It penetrates in me so much.

So here are some emails for you to enjoy.  Note how often Elianne types "Hahahahahahha."  I could totally picture Elianne talking and laughing as she's typing the email to me.  You may need to click on the picture to maximize.  That way you can read the emails better :-)

I told you she's a HA HA baby.

She calls me bau (read: smelly).

Her famous "Good night my little gentlemen" phrase.

She knows how to do emoticons too.

ELIANNE'S THANK YOU EMAIL

When my parents in law went to Russia last year, they bought some Matryoshka dolls.  One of the sets they bought was for Elianne.  Last October when we visited them in Indonesia, they asked me to bring the set back to the States and give it to Elianne.  So I did.

Since there is a huge time difference between here and Indonesia, it was quite a challenge for Elianne to express her gratitude to my parents in law.  Of course she's not short on idea.  This is what she did alternatively.

ELIANNE'S FIRST EMAIL

I don't know about you.  But I didn't have my first email till I was 18.  Seems like the technology has embraced MUCH younger generation these days.  For example Mini Me (Elianne).  She got her first email account couple weeks after turning 4.  Can you believe that?

I'd like to share with you the first email Elianne sent me.  I was so shocked to receive it in my Inbox.  I thought her mom wrote it for her.  However, after I read it, I could tell she wrote it herself.

I smiled BIG TIME to find her capitalized and non-capitalized letters mixed up.  Prior to sending me emails, Elianne used to sending me daily letters.  I would post them in my blog later after I've scanned them.  In her letters, i could see her progress from writing in all non-capitalized letters to having the first letter in a sentence capitalized.  As I post more blogs on Elianne's emails, you will see she's progressing in her typing too.

FEELING LIKE A TEENAGER AGAIN

You know what?  Having had a four-and-a-half-year long distance relationship, I kinda miss video conference.  :-)  Marcel and I used to do this for hours each day.  It's something I looked forward to every day after I had gotten back from school.  Though we didn't talk the whole time, having him on the screen just made me feel that he was accompanying me as I was doing my homework or studying.

Of course I'm grateful that I don't have to do this every day now.  Below are some silly screenshots I took during my recent video conference with Marcel.

Marcel, "Hey Yanny ... Oco ..."

Marcel, "Loves ..."

Marcel, "Youuuuuuuu.  Kiss bye."

Yanny, "Awww ... thank you, Oco.  Miss you miss you.  Muach."

It feels like college time again hihihihihi.  What do you miss doing with your significant other now?  Do it and feel how fresh it's coming back on you!  :-)

May this be a blessing.

JASMINE'S VERSION OF AIRPLANE SIGN LANGUAGE

This happened last year when Jasmine just turned 2.  I want to write this on my blog so that I will always remember it.  :-)

Ko Akiong's little sister (Aunty Ellen) came for Jasmine's 2nd birthday party.  She actually stayed for couple more weeks too.  Jasmine had a blast with Ellen around.

The day after Ellen left, I stopped by Jasmine's house.  I asked Jasmine, "Where is Kukuh Ellen, Jasmine?"

Jasmine said, "Goneeeee" as she slightly extended her two arms to her side and flapped her palms repeatedly like bird wings.

So I asked Elisse, "What does that mean?"

Elisse cracked up and said, "You know.  Yesterday we took Ellen to the airport.  So Jasmine is telling you Ellen had left and that she took an airplane to go."

I laughed so hard because the Airplane sign should be like this.  With your pointer, pinky, and thumb extended while middle and ring fingers tucked into your palm, move your hand (facing down) forward and away from your body repeatedly.

THOMAS' VERSION OF XIE XIE SIGN LANGUAGE

I've been writing more about little children God has placed in my life.  Children has been my passion.  I love their innocence, laugh, cry, little figures, little feet, growing and losing teeth, smell, learning process, learning ability and many more.  So I thought I would share some of my experiences with kids with you.  Believe me, they keep you young.

Back in December, I went to Indiana to spend time with Evelyn before her move to Shanghai.  It's actually a perfect timing to visit considering I had not seen Thomas (her oldest child) since he's born and Rachel (her second child) was about to turn 1 month old that week.  Thomas was 14 months old when I came.  He's a heart stealer!!

Back in San Jose, many parents have been teaching their kids sign language.  My exposure to American Sign Language (ASL) went all the way back to 2001 when I was in Austin teaching Math and Chemistry to people with disabilities.  They were the meekest people to teach.  In return, they taught me couple sign languages.  It wasn't till late 2007 that I was exposed to teaching sign language to babies.  The first parent I knew teaching sign language was Elisse.  And I have been practicing it since then.  Thank you to Elisse for making my hands wet on sign language :-)

Anyway, during my visit to Indiana, I was trying to teach Thomas some sign languages.  Unfortunately, Thomas doesn't speak or understand English.  So it was a little bit of a challenge there considering ASL uses English.

The first sign I taught Thomas was "Thank You" which looks like a kiss bye or fly kiss.  At the same time I was teaching Thomas this sign, his grandma was teaching him to pray.  Each time she would start the prayer with, "Xie xie" (read: Thank you).  And each time she would clasp her hands together to pray.  Somehow, cute little Thomas mixed up the idea of signing (to express his feeling since he can't speak yet) that I'd been teaching him with the gesture his grandma had been teaching him to pray.

As a result, each time you say and want him to do "Thank You" or "Xie xie," Thomas would clasped his hands together and whispered, "Xie xie."  SO CUTEEEEE.  Though it's not the proper ASL's Thank You, it's still understandable.  Especially to those people around him.

And here's a video of Thomas' version of "Thank You."

DO YOU KNOW YOUR JINGLE BELLS LYRICS?

The week after Christmas, Marcel was driving me to the office.  We were stuck at a traffic light for awhile.  All of the sudden, Marcel sang, "Dancing to the pole." (with Jingle Bells rhythm).

(Marcel paused; we looked at each other)

Yanny, "That didn't sound right, Babe!"
Marcel, "Hmm, that didn't come out right huh?"

But none of us knew the right lyrics.

Marcel, "Dancing with the pole."
Yanny, "Hmm, that didn't sound right either.  I think it's snow instead of pole."
Marcel, "Dancing to the snow."
Marcel, "Oh oh I know, Dancing with the snow!"

(We both paused again)

All of the sudden we cracked up.  The light turned green (finally).  We gave up by then.  Surely we weren't lyrics people and never paid attention to the lyrics.

Once I got to the office, I Googled the lyrics.  Now .. it should REALLY say, "Dashing through the snow!"  :-)

PRAY FOR YOU, AMEN

I celebrated the coming of 2010 with flu.  Of course, it's because I wasn't wise enough to stay way too late on New Year's Eve.

Maxie heard of me sick.  So he asked his daddy Chris to give me a call.  Now, I'd like to share with you a 13-second video of what Maxie said on the phone.

Thank you, Baby Maxie.  Aunty is so much better today. :-)

May this be a blessing!
